Ah, a top trends list – that’s always something we look forward to right? To make sure we’re “in with it” looking “on fleek” at all times. Well, here is a compilation of the A/W 2017’s Top Trends (at least in my opinion)! I was hesitant that the timing of this post would be too late but given SoCal’s extensive summer months and the first glimpse of fall barely making its way to us, this is totally time-relative.
Also, before I begin, if you didn’t know what AW meant, it stands for autumn and winter. Don’t feel dumb, I didn’t know that for the longest time either, namely because no one actually refers to fall as ‘autumn’.
So here is my short list as well as links to items of the more dominant fall & winter trends for the season, and at the end, I will be revealing my “Here to Stay” and “Dump by May” picks.
Red anything: Dresses, coats, tops, pants, skirts, shoes, accessories, EVERYTHING. Luckily red is one of my favorite colors, so I can blast my outfits with red this season without folks saying, “Does she wear anything other than red…?”

Metallics: Golds, silvers, & pewters. I personally would shoot for metallics only in tops, skirts, and accessories. Anything else might be a little too excessive unless that is your focal piece; then everything else should be a solid or neutral color.

Plaid coats/blazers: Women’s fashion loves incorporating masculine pieces. I’d wear trousers or pants over a dress any day of the week. This trend is perfect for the season because not only is it a vintage approach to outerwear, but it’s also a perfect touch of masculinity without looking too manly. You can pair this with jeans, a skirt, a dress, pretty much anything. I see it as the new “black leather jacket”.

Retro hats: Parisian hats, fisherman/baker boy hats, military style hats. In my opinion, this has been one of the most fun accessories yet in the last couple years. The beauty of it is that there is no ‘real/one’ way to style them. Anything goes, so your options are endless!
Kitten heel boots/Slouch boots: Ditch (but not entirely) your platform 5+ inch boots&pumps. AW17 has gone feet-friendly (thank goodness). The go-to heel height I would say will range between 1.5-2.5”. They’re all the craze this fall and winter. And in terms of boots, tall sleek is still in, but low ankle as well as low heel slouch boots are definitely making a comeback.
Colorful satin/embellished heels: Everyone loves wearing all black, especially in the winter. The easiest way to make a plain all black outfit pop is with pairing it with some bright turquoise, yellow, forest green, or fuchsia heels.
Here to Stay:
My two favorite trends that I think are here to stay are ‘Red Anything’ and ‘Retro Hats’. Although I do love all the other trends, red has always been a staple color for many years. Thus, this trend is as timeless as it gets. Any outfit with a pop of red will pass with flying colors.
I love the retro hat trend because, for me, as a crazy hat lady, hats are such a cool and easy statement piece. You could be wearing the most basic of outfits, but throw on a good hat, and your outfit goes from a 2.5 to a 9.5. I don’t think retro hats are going anywhere – I see them staying at least for another year or so. Lack of Color has in my opinion created the movement of implementing more classic/retro/boho hats as an everyday staple the last couple years. Therefore, I think its here to stay.
I could also maybe see the slouch boots transition over – boots are always relatively timeless and unless your boot is insanely slouch and a bright color, you should be fine wearing those pieces into the next year. Same goes for plaid overcoats, though, I would like to see them reinvent the plaid overcoat into something lighter and brighter.
Dump by May:
I don’t see colorful satin and deep rich gem tone shoes exceeding past January or February. They’re pretty season specific. Dominant metallic pieces may die down as well, however small pops of metallic are always acceptable. One category I do see metallics as an up-and-comer though is in 2018 weddings. But that’s a whole other subject to delve into.
